How Sleep Foundation Tested the Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers

Sleep Foundation’s recognition is based on a multi-stage evaluation process rather than manufacturer specifications alone. Its testing includes analysis of mattress construction, materials, and firmness, followed by hands-on evaluations in its Seattle Test Lab. The team measures factors including pressure relief, motion isolation, temperature regulation, and resistance to compression. Field testers then sleep on the mattresses at home for two to three weeks.

For the side-sleeper guide specifically, Sleep Foundation began with mattresses earning an overall rating of at least 8.5 and above-average scores during side-sleeper testing. It then placed additional emphasis on factors including pressure relief, comfort-layer construction, and temperature control.

Sleep Foundation also reported using side-sleeper-specific pressure mapping on its top 30 candidates before determining its final recommendations.

Sleep Foundation Names Bear Elite Hybrid Best for Side Sleepers With Back Pain

Side sleepers have unique mattress needs because more pressure is concentrated around areas like the shoulders and hips. Sleep Foundation specifically prioritized pressure relief, comfort-layer construction, and temperature control when evaluating mattresses for its side-sleeper guide. Its team narrowed a database of more than 2,000 mattresses to models with strong overall and side-sleeper testing scores.

Among those mattresses, the Bear Elite Hybrid earned an 8.5/10 Test Lab Score and was selected as the Best Mattress for Side Sleepers With Back Pain.

Sleep Foundation describes the Elite Hybrid as:

“A close-conforming memory foam hybrid offering great pressure relief.”

According to Sleep Foundation, the Elite Hybrid stands out because its adaptive comfort layers work with zoned support to address some of the specific challenges side sleepers with back pain may experience.

As the publication explains:

“The Bear Elite Hybrid features adaptive comfort layers that mold to your body and zoned coils for targeted support.”

Sleep Foundation says this combination helps promote even alignment, reduce pressure along the spine, and cushion areas including the shoulders, lumbar region, and hips.

Why Mattress Support Matters for Side Sleepers

Finding the right balance between cushioning and support is especially important when sleeping on your side. According to Sleep Foundation, the shoulders and hips sink farther into a mattress in this position, which can contribute to poor spinal alignment when the support system isn’t strong enough.

That balance is one of the reasons the Elite Hybrid performed well in Sleep Foundation’s testing. The publication describes it as a “well-balanced mattress” combining foam cushioning with the strong support of pocketed coils. Its mixed-foam comfort system also earned praise for relieving pressure.

The mattress received an 8/10 for pressure relief, while its side-sleeper scores remained strong across all three weight groups tested:

  • Under 130 pounds: 8.5/10
  • 130–230 pounds: 9/10
  • Over 230 pounds: 8.5/10

Sleep Foundation’s testers found the mattress performed especially well for side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, while noting that its adaptive, supportive design can accommodate a broader range of body types.

Zoned Support Helps Promote Side-Sleeping Alignment

Sleep Foundation specifically highlighted the Elite Hybrid’s medium firm (6) model for side sleepers. Its zoned transitional layer reinforces the torso and hips to help maintain alignment, while the upper comfort layers provide cushioning around areas such as the shoulders and knees.

Sleep Foundation writes:

“Its medium firm (6) feel is enhanced by a zoned transitional layer that reinforces the torso and hips, helping maintain healthy spinal alignment.”

The publication found that firmness preference can also vary with body weight. The medium (5) model appealed to side and back sleepers up to 130 pounds, while the medium firm (6) provided what Sleep Foundation described as an even balance of cushioning and support for side and back sleepers up to 230 pounds.

That choice of firmness levels gives sleepers more flexibility to find the amount of cushioning and reinforcement that fits their body type and preferred feel.

Another Expert Recognition for the Bear Elite Hybrid

Being named Sleep Foundation’s Best Mattress for Side Sleepers With Back Pain reinforces what the Elite Hybrid was designed to deliver: a combination of pressure-relieving comfort and targeted support.

For side sleepers in particular, the ability to cushion the shoulders and other pressure-sensitive areas while supporting the torso and hips can help create a more balanced sleeping surface. Sleep Foundation’s testing found that the Elite Hybrid delivered that combination particularly well, with strong side-sleeper scores across different body-weight groups.

Sleep Foundation reiterated the recognition in its March 2026 update, noting that the “Bear Elite Hybrid continues to reign supreme for back pain” and pointing to its adaptive comfort layers and zoned coils as reasons for the distinction.

For sleepers searching for a hybrid mattress that combines cushioning, targeted support, and multiple firmness choices, the latest Sleep Foundation recognition adds another independent expert evaluation to consider.
