Can't make the gym? Here are 3 “Sports” you can play from bed

It’s that time of year again.

The days are getting shorter. The weather is getting colder. Making it to the gym or spending time being active outside has never seemed more difficult. Luckily, if you’re like us at here at Bear Mattress, and believe that keeping an active mind is just as important as keeping your abs tight, then we have the blog post for you. We're highlighting three “sports” that are gaining a ton of traction and don’t require you to leave the cozy comfort of your Bear Mattress in order to participate.

As advancements in technology continue to alter the sports landscape, these leagues have amassed huge followings of devoted fans, professional stars, massive prize pools, national television deals, and large corporate sponsorships on the way to quickly making inroads towards the mainstream.

1.) League of Legends - Sure, they’re video games, but “ESports” (as they’re called in the industry) have become a mega cash cow in recent years and include some of the most die-hard fans you will find anywhere. It’s estimated that the “Esports” industry is expected to make nearly half a billion dollars in 2016, with an audience of over 230 million regular players. League of Legends or “LOL” as it’s affectionately known sets the standard for this category with over 100 million monthly players. The League has professional teams from 5 continents who compete on a regular basis for serious cash prizes. The winner of the 2016 League of Legends championship took home a cool $5 million first place prize.

2.) Drone Racing League - Yes, you heard that right. Drones. Racing. Sure it sounds like something out of the Terminator or Star Wars movies (remember Pod Racing?) but there’s nothing fictional about the DRL’s growing popularity. Don’t believe us? Just ask one of the league’s 140 thousand Facebook followers. The Drone Racing League is now regularly featured on ESPN where you can catch homemade drones zipping through the air at speeds in excess of 120mph. DRL competitors consist of all age groups and come from around the world to compete for a shot at remote-controlled immortality. The 2016 Drone Racing League World Championship is set to air this Sunday at 9pm EST on ESPN.

3.) The World Series of Poker - While not as new as our #1 and #2 selection, the World Series of Poker continues to attract millions of fans and thousands of players each and every year. Drawn by it’s hefty payouts and competitive environment, amateur and professional players alike descend on Las Vegas each summer for the 65 event schedule. Play culminates with the annual “Main Event”, which anyone with $10K lying around is welcome to play. While the official “World Series” requires travel to Las Vegas, thousands of players compete virtually every day as the game is now regulated in Nevada, Delaware, and New Jersey. With more states set to lobby for legalization in the near future, expect to see even more players playing from bed.
